United in Purpose

One of the great leadership partnerships in American history was that of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Together, they led the Corps of Discovery across thousands of miles of unfamiliar territory, overcoming countless challenges along the way.

Historians have noted an interesting aspect of their leadership. Although Lewis and Clark certainly had differences of opinion, there is no record of them arguing or undermining one another in front of their men. They discussed issues privately but presented a united front publicly. Their unity built confidence, strengthened trust, and kept the expedition focused on its mission.

The same principle is essential in every healthy organization. We will not always see every issue the same way, and thoughtful discussion is valuable. However, once a decision has been made, our responsibility is to move forward together. Unity does not require uniformity of thought; it requires a shared commitment to the mission and to one another.

The Apostle Paul reminds us:
"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." — Ephesians 4:3

As we serve together, may we encourage one another, speak well of one another, and remain united in the work God has entrusted to us. When we do, we strengthen not only our team but also our witness for Christ.

In His service,
Terry L. Heisey
Head of School
